What is Dermapen needling and how does it work?
Dermapen needling is also a form of micro-needling, collagen induction therapy that is minimally-invasive and non-surgical. The Dermapen functions in exactly the same manner as described under “Skin Neelding”, except that it has 12 needles, circularly spaced over an 8mm circumference needle holder.
This spacing of the needles renders the same neovascularisation and neocollagenesis following treatment as the “Skin Needling”, but is less effective on specific scars, deep wrinkles or stretch marks. However, for skin rejuvenation, improved skin texture, firmness and hydration, the Dermapen is equally effective as conventional skin needling, and in case of larger treatment areas or maintaining the skin’s youthful vitality, the Dermapen treatment would be preferable.
Professional Dermapen needling is considered to be one of the safest skin treatment procedures, because unlike chemical peels, dermabrasion and laser treatments. Dermapen needling causes minimal damage to the skin, with no downtime and the patient may resume regular activities immediately.
What is Dermapen needling indicated for?
Skin needling is effectively used for:
Reducing fine lines
Tightening sagging skin
Smoothing rough skin
Reducing and softening thermal burn contractures and scars
Use over larger treatment areas
Maintaining youthful looking skin
What to expect from the procedure?
The procedure is mildly painful, but well tolerated. It takes a few minutes up to 2 hours to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem.
All lotion and makeup is removed from the treatment area prior to the procedure
The therapist then applies a numbing cream to the area and leaves it to activate for 30 min
The skin is then sterilised and needled in a repetitive technique, specific to the problem or desired result
Depending on the condition and size of area to be treated it may take 15-90 minutes to complete the procedure
After the procedure the therapist will apply a renewing skin serum that should be left on the skin and only rinsed off the morning after
A minimum of 2 weeks is recommended between two treatments
Post procedure care
Depending on the condition treated, the patient may experience redness and swelling immediately after the treatment, both of which will disappear over the next 24 to 48 hours
After a few days, the patient may experience a minor breakout, as deeper lying impurities are pushed out (most likely if treated in the face)
Sun protection is recommended for several weeks
Treatment effects are as described under “Skin Needling” - cumulative and an improvement will be seen within 2 - 12 weeks of each treatment. The results are not instantaneous, as it takes 90 days for collagen to be manufactured and matured in the skin. In addition, over the following 6-12 months, this new collagen slowly shortens and progressive tightening of the skin is seen.
